Top 10 list for IEP

My daughter just finished her last year of special need preschool. I think I learned more than she did in dealing with her IEP.

Top 10 List for things you need to know  about IEP

1. If it NOT written in the IEP its not happening.

2. PWN, Prior written Notice. You  need this at every IEP so you as a parent knows what they added to your child IEP or taken out of your child IEP.

3. ADD in the IEP that school must give you a copy of service logs twice a year.  Service logs  are logs that speech, occupational therapy and physical therapy are keeping on your child. It tells what they work on and when they saw your child.

4. Don't assume they are teaching your kids letters, number, shape, etc. Remember your kids learn differently than other kids. So 5 min. in circle time your child not learning the letter of the day. This is why you need whatever you want your child to learn written in the iep. Example: goal 1 by january 2013 utilized  a multiensory therapy approach and ABA methodolgy, alexis will work on letters a-z.

5. Communication log needs to be added to the IEP so they have to let you know what is going on each day.

6. IF your child has FAilure to Thrive or trouble gaining weight. I had my doctor write a  doctor order for my child to eat every 2 hours.  This will help the other kids are probally hungry and thirsty and they just can't communicate it.

7.If you want your child to have one on one speech therapy, then have the teacher write it in the IEP.

8.As a parent you can ask for training like for PECS or ABA so you know how to do work with your child at home.

9. IEP over rides curiculum.

10. your child has ABA ask for the data at the end each grading period. But it has to be doccumented in iep. IF you need a bathroom log or feeding log on your child add it to your iep. During the end of the year ask for the logs.
